Steps to Becoming a Professional Engineer

 

A civil engineer's products are most often in the public arena and therefore public safety and health are important considerations. For this reason planning, designing and construction of projects require a professional engineer direct such work. It is important for civil engineers to aspire to become a professional engineer. There are several steps in becoming a professional engineer.

 

1. Graduate from an ABET accredited civil engineering program

2. Take and pass the fundamental exam (http://www.bagley.msstate.edu/academics/feexams/index.php)

3. Work under the supervision of a professional engineer for a period of four years. Credit for part of the four years can be earned by completing the co-op program or completing a graduate degree.

4. Take and pass the professional engineering exam.
