Reston, Va. – Mississippi State University’s (MSU) Concrete Canoe team won the Concrete Canoe Deep South Student Conference that took place at University of Louisiana, Lafayette on March 23-24, 2018. The MSU team has been invited to compete against 24 other teams at the National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC), on June 23-25, 2018 at San Diego State University in San Diego, California.
The Concrete Canoe Student Conference competitions require students to collaborate as teams and use engineering skills to design and construct a seaworthy canoe made entirely of concrete. Each team must compete in four categories: Design Paper, Oral Presentation, Final Product, and several racing events, for a chance to move on to the NCCC, where the winner will compete against 24 other teams of students from schools across the nation.
“The American Society of Civil Engineers is excited to recognize the winners of the Concrete Canoe Student Conference competitions and to invite these teams to compete at the national level in San Diego,” says Kristina Swallow, P.E., ENV SP, F.ASCE president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). “The Concrete Canoe competitions, both local and national, present a unique challenge that requires students to craft innovative solutions using teamwork, problem-solving skills and civil engineering knowledge. We are proud of the work that these students have put in and wish them luck at the National Concrete Canoe Competition.”
In its 31st year, the NCCC challenges civil engineering students to apply the engineering principles learned in the classroom to a real-world task, while utilizing project management and team building skills. The Concrete Canoe program is designed to test the knowledge, creativity and stamina of each team. Over the course of the school year, teams around the world plan, research and construct a canoe out of concrete. The competition evaluates teams on design and construction of the canoe, a technical design report, a formal business presentation and five different races—men’s and women’s endurance races, men’s and women’s sprint races and a co-ed sprint race.
The National Concrete Canoe Competition is organized by ASCE and hosted annually by a university student chapter, thanks in part to funds provided by the ASCE Foundation.
